Typical Signs of a Medical Emergency In Pets
Please note that this is not a comprehensive list of signs and symptoms of a medical emergency. If you have any questions about behaviors that are not on this list, please don’t hesitate to call us.
- Excessive bleeding that won’t stop
- Blood coming from your pet’s nose, mouth, rectum, or blood appearing in urine or being coughed up
- Difficulty breathing, such as choking, gagging and persistent coughing
- Difficulty, inability or pain when passing urine or feces
- Obvious injury to areas like the eye, or general wounds and lacerations
- Known or suspected swallowing of foreign objects, allergens or poisons (e.g. antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, pest poison, etc.)
- Seizures or unsteady gait, including severe lameness or inability to move their leg
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea (more than twice in 24 hours, unless other symptoms are present)
- Refusal to drink water for over 24 hours
- Swollen and/or tender body parts
- Bloated stomach and/or foaming mouth
- Difficulty pushing puppies or kittens during labor
- Obvious signs of pain or extreme and unusual anxiety
